When the term “Starting from nothing” is used in relation to a person’s success, I always try to understand the how and why.
Based on what a wide audience thinks of the term “Starting from nothing”, it could be defined in a literal way : a person who started with nothing, with a good idea turned into a success story.
A success story at what cost ? This new generation is trying to follow in the footsteps of these wealthy “Starting from nothing” moguls, who include : Amancio Ortega (Inditex, Zara…), Oprah Winfrey, Howard Schultz (Starbucks), J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter), François Pinault (Kering), Steve Jobs, Jay Z, C. J. Walker … Etc.
In my opinion, starting from nothing is just a term to reduce the hard work these people had to achieve to reach their goals. As an entrepreneur for the past ten years, I can assure you that you never start from nothing (yes, that’s quite a myth).
Even with only € 100 is starting somewhere. Sacrifices made, adventures and all the unimaginable contexts one experiences cannot be defined by the term “starting from nothing”.
I think it would be better to say : gone without advantages. The advantages can be related to the budget, the network, the know-how or even the concept, the idea of the project among others. Many people decide to become entrepreneurs without knowing why, how… Others, those of this new generation who use new technologies to achieve their goals.
An end concluded by success or failure. Or of several failures concluded by a success worthy of the Hollywood movie.
